The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Marein bei Knittelfeld is in the Kirchweiler Paradeis in the village of Sankt Marein bei Knittelfeld in the municipality of Sankt Marein-Feistritz in the Murtal district in Styria . The hard the Nativity of Mary consecrated parish church belongs to the dean's office Knittelfeld in the Diocese Graz-Seckau . The church and the cemetery are under monument protection .

history

A first church was built before 1075 by Hartnid - father of Adalram von Waldeck , the founder of Seckau Abbey . In 1140 an Augustinian canon monastery was built on this site , but - due to the quieter location - it was moved to Seckau as early as 1142 . In 1437, with the provost Andreas Ennstaler and the builder Niklas Velbacher from Admont, a new construction of the church began, which was completed shortly before the middle of the 15th century. In 1480 the church was plundered and damaged by the Turks and consecrated again in 1490. The Annakapelle, presumably donated in 1364, is preserved today as a sacristy. The richly designed vestibule of the sacristy was restored in 1962. The north and west walls and the tower basement are also preserved from older predecessor buildings. The stone architecture was restored from 1977 to 1981.

architecture

The church stands in a raised position and is visible as far as the Murtal . It is surrounded by a walled cemetery.

The two-aisled hall church with rich structural details is an important church building from the time of Frederick III. The entire building shows stonemason's marks.

The wide two-aisled, four-bay nave has east masonry that is inclined towards the choir. This directs the view into the choir. The nave has a six-pointed diamond star vault with round keystones, some of which are decorated with coats of arms. The octagonal pillars, on which four round services are placed, and the half-set, strong wall pillars with templates formed from the octagon, which are accompanied by two round services, carry the vault. This creates the strong structure of the church space. In the west bays, the pillars and services have a cylindrical center piece. The vault painting is easier in the nave than in the choir. In the southeast yoke there is the year 1490.

The retracted two-bay choir, which is the same height as the nave, has a five-eighth end and stands with the nave under a common, steep roof. The choir vault has ribs in a bent row with round keystones, some in relief, with the head of Christ, the Lamb of God, coat of arms and foliage. The services are like in the longhouse. There are two piscines in the choir and by the right side altar. At the services of the choir there are partly figurally designed consoles and richly pierced canopies. The tracery windows have two and three lanes with plaster panes from 1894. In the choir vault there is a rich vault painting with flowers and tendrils, dated 1463 in the end of the choir.

The front arch is similar to the structure of the choir, but it is more richly designed. On the front arch there are heraldic consoles with inscriptions, each held by two angels, to the north with Duke Albrecht of Austria with a binding shield, to the south Kunig Fridreich to Austria 1445 .

In the west yoke of the northern nave aisle is a fully set tower under a steep tent roof. In the north of the nave there are three extensions under the large common roof. To the north of the east yoke of the nave and choir, the sacristy is built on, a single yoke with a five-eighth end and a strong ribbed vault on round services with round keystones. Its northern outer wall emerges in a trapezoidal manner. It probably dates from the third quarter of the 14th century. In the shield walls of the sacristy are wall paintings with saints in landscapes with acanthus frames, dated 1698.

A narrow gallery yoke is inserted between the choir and the northern sacristy with a profiled, strongly stepped, pointed arch portal in the choir with a door with a Gothic flat section and an iron pull ring. Above it is a gallery with parapet panels and consoles on which there are baroque busts of saints (around 1700). To the east of the Emporenjoch is a spiral staircase which leads to the gallery with a star rib vault and canopy-like hanging keystones. The gallery shows itself in the choir with a pointed arch.

To the west of the sacristy is a rectangular vestibule integrated into the north front with particularly rich building details. The star rib vault has partly free-running ribs, all of which have three-pass tracery noses. The large hanging keystone has brackets and canopies. In the four corners of the room, the ribs end on canopy brackets, underneath are busts with tapes and coats of arms. The west portal has a pointed arch. The ogival sacristy portal in the east is lower. A wide, fluted round arch portal is presented to it. In the throat of the arch there are plastic representations of animals and people. The vestibule in the south is open to the nave with a pointed arched, profiled double portal with tracery. The door openings have a Gothic flat section, on the central pillar is a canopy-crowned console bust with a clergyman, probably the builder Propst Andreas Ennstaler. On the left is a master builder bust with the inscription ribbon Niclas.zu.admud.maist.d.kirchn.1448 . Above the vestibule is a gallery open to the church. In the west of the vestibule, a staircase open to the nave leads to the gallery of the vestibule. The two galleries of different heights each have half a star rib vault on canopy brackets with busts, divided by a connecting portal with a shoulder arch.

The west gallery stretches past the fully protruding tower, in the north aisle as a narrow corridor, in the south aisle on a groined vault.

Furnishing

The three-storey high altar built into the end of the choir with gallery portals with the chronogram 1703 was restored in 1963.
