The Mürz Valley Alps , also called Mürzberge , are a mountain group of the Eastern Alps . They extend north of the Mur-Mürz-Furche in Upper Styria .

On the concept of the Mürz Valley Alps

The name is relatively unusual, but it is particularly common in the geography of Styria. In the landscape structure of Styria they form - recently also under the name Mürzberge , analogous to the Murberg  mountains - the region N.9.

They are assigned to the Northern Alps , whereby they form the southern foothills of the Styrian-Lower Austrian Limestone Alps , geologically they belong partly to the Grauwackenzone , partly to the Central Alps .

In the Alpine Club division of the Eastern Alps (AVE) they correspond to the southern groups of the Ennstaler Alps  (16), the templates of the Hochschwab group  (18), the southern part of the Mürzsteg Alps  (19) and the foothills of the Rax-Schneeberg group  (20) .

geography

The Mürz Valley Alps extend from Sankt Michael in Obersteiermark , at the confluence of the Liesingtal into the Murtal, eastward, north of the Mur ( orographic left ) and Mürz (right), to the Semmering Pass . It is a wooded mountain range , divided by several transverse valleys, with a low mountain range character , which accompanies the easternmost massifs of the limestone high Alps to the south. The highest point is the Thalerkogel at 1655  m above sea level. A.

Boundary and neighboring mountain groups

The boundary is formed in the south by the eastern Mur-Mürz furrow , in the north by the incompletely developed longitudinal valley and basin lines of the Trofaiacher and Aflenz basins . The border runs:

for topographical reasons according to the Styrian landscape structure on the valley slope, the valley floors are independent zones: T.7, B.6, B.7 and T.6 respectively
∗∗according to the Styrian landscape structure, orographically about Myrtengraben - Heidbach - Auebach upwards - to the Preiner Bach in Lower Austria. According to the Styrian division, the Rax itself still belongs to the Mürzsteg Alps  (N.8d), according to AVE not, where the Semmering Mountains belong to the Rax-Schneeberg Group  (19)
∗∗∗from Stübming to Etmißl on the southern edge of the Aflenz basin (B.5), including the Mitterberg and Schöckel north of Thörl, but leaving out Etmißl itself
∗∗∗∗Precisely from Hafning to the east, crossing the lower Rötzgraben to the Laintalbach near Laintal III - back southwest - then westwards via Wolkersdorf - Gmeingrube - St. Peter-Freienstein - Traidersberg - Trabocher See - Veitscherwald - Seiz This route saves the Trofaiach basin with its limestone zones from, especially the Kulm . Orographically about Vordernberger Bach - valley floor of the Trofaiach basin - lower Ploderbach .

structure

The train is broken by several transverse valleys:

geology

In the far west, the Mürz Valley Alps consist of weakly metamorphic rocks from the Grauwackenzone. This stretches in a wedge shape from the Liesingtal to Kindberg, as well as to Thörl, with formations also continuing from the west of the Liesing. The zone is known for its mineral resources, in addition to the predominant slate ( phyllite , green stone ) there are also old limes ( Leoben lime works ), in the far south there are also gneisses (mining near St. Michael), magnesite and talc deposits in Obertal ( Oberdorf magnesite mine ) . In it you can find Inneralpines Young Tertiary. with lignite in the Trofaiacher basin, in the Urgental near Bruck, near Parschlug , and also the Leoben Tertiary with the Leoben bright coal mining (Seegraben, Tollinggraben, until 1964),

In the center it consists of higher metamorphic central alpine crystalline, paragneiss on the northern roof, eye gneiss on the southern flank, with a vein of Kapellen slate in between .

Towards the east, the tectonics become complex again, here mica schists appear, which belong to the envelope slate series , Semmering quartzite , Alpine Verruciano , and then the carbonate rocks of the Semmering Mesozoic .
