The Floning is a 1583  m above sea level. A. high, almost pyramid-shaped mountain southwest of Thörl on the border between the municipality of Sankt Katharein an der Laming and the urban area of Kapfenberg in northern Styria . It belongs to the Hochschwab group and is heavily forested, which is rare in mountains in the Grauwackenzone . A secondary peak, the Kleine Floning ( 1553  m ), is around 1 km south.

geology

Geologically, the Floning is a remnant of old, metamorphic rocks from the Paleozoic Era , which, as paragneiss and dark slate (" Grauwackenschiefer "), form a transition area only a few kilometers wide between the limestone massif of the Hochschwab and the actual core of the Central Alps . The latter are known by crystalline geologists as " Middle Eastern Alps " because of a special way of their formation in the system of the Eastern Alps .

To the east, the summit heights of the Middle Eastern Alps decrease continuously until they descend 50 km further beyond the Semmering Pass ( 985  m ) under the young sediment of the Vienna Basin . In the region under consideration, however, several rock formations are strongly intertwined, e.g. B. the northern half of the Floning with Dinaric and Triadic layers. As a result, it is shaped much more gently, which is even more noticeable in the 2 km north adjoining double summit of the sky ( 1145  m ) and its rounded heights.

The rapid Strohsitzbach flows through the rather steep valley between the two peaks to the east until it flows into the Thörlbach at 600 m above sea level , which in turn reaches the Mürz after 12 km . The narrow end of the valley of the Strohsitzbach on the northern slope of the Floning is called Finstertal , while its source area Strohsitz gave the stream its name. The area is rich in springs that provide local water supply.

In the standard work on the geology of the Alps (see literature ) the region described is assigned to the approximately 20 km long “ Thörler Zug ”, which is mixed with local scales . The mountain range integrated into it is known as the "Troiseck-Floning Train".

In the Aflenz- Thörl area , the Grauwackenzone is also mixed with Mesozoic flysch and Jura limestone .
