The Mürzsteg Alps are a mountain group of the Eastern Alps ( Northern Alps ), which is located in Styria and, to a small extent, in Lower Austria . The highest mountain is the Hohe Veitsch ( 1981  m above sea level ) in the center of the group, the most extensive massif of which, however, is the Schneealpe ( 1903  m above sea level ) in the northwest near the Rax .

The Mürzsteg Alps are bordered by the Türnitz Alps in the north, the Gutenstein Alps in the northeast, the Rax-Schneeberg Group in the east, the peripheral mountains east of the Mur (especially the Fischbach Alps ) in the southeast and the Hochschwab in the west .

geology

The mountain group is part of the Styrian-Lower Austrian Limestone Alps and is delimited from the neighboring massifs by the Mürz Valley (= part of the tectonically still active Mur-Mürz Furche ), the upper reaches of the Mürz (main town Mürzsteg ) and the Seeberg pass road. Geologists refer to it as the threshold and basin facies.

Its rocks are mostly from the Triassic ( Hallstatt facies ) with Wetterstein limestone , Hallstatt limestone and Mürz Valley layers (dark, chert-bearing limestone and marl with foraminifera, brachiopods and other fossils ), while the neighboring Hochschwab (up to 2277  m above sea level ) also Has reef limestone .
With a strip up to 10 km wide, the south of the mountain group belongs to the Grauwackenzone (rocks from the Young Palaeozoic and Lower Triassic; Mürz Valley Alps ).
