The Hohe Veitsch , also Veitsch, Veitschalpe , is at an altitude of 1981  m above sea level. A. the highest mountain range in the Mürzsteg Alps in Styria . The limestone stock, rich in views and flowers, stretches from the main summit in the west to the east (plateau at around 1500 m) to the Klein-Veitsch-Alm for around 5.5 km.

On the plateau, just below the summit, is the Graf-Meran-Haus of the ÖTK ( 1836  m ). The basic farmer's hut ( 1451  m above sea level ) is located on the eastern foothills of the mountain.

Ascents

  • Part of the north-south long-distance hiking trail leads from Niederalpl (pass summit , 1221  m ) to the Sohlenalm ( 1352  m ), along the west side of the Wildkamm , then through a stone channel up to the high plateau (approx. 3 to 3½ hours).
  • Path 465 leads from Niederalpl via the so-called toboggan to the summit (approx. 2½ hours).
  • A little further east, the Styrian Mariazellerweg leads from Dobrein ( Mürzsteg ) to the plateau (approx. 4 hours).
  • Coming from the south (Brunnalm, Veitsch municipality ), the Hohe Veitsch appears as a mighty limestone mountain range with steeply sloping south faces. The Graf-Meran-Haus can be reached along the serpentine path west of the rock faces (west of the so-called 'Hundsschupfen'; 1½ to 2 hours from Brunnalm) or via the 'Goaß-Steign' (east of the rock faces, about 2½ hours).
  • From the east (Grundbauerhütte) the north alpine path 01 leads over the plateau to the summit (2½ hours).
  • From the southwest the Teufelssteig leads to the Graf-Meran-Haus; this combines the long-distance hiking trails 01, 05 and the Styrian Mariazellerweg; paths 01 and 05 connect the Veitsch with the Styrian Seeberg . The Teufelssteig can also be reached from the Brunnalm.

Plateau hike

The scenic crossing of the plateau from the Graf-Meran-Haus via the Hohe Veitsch, the Seeboden and the Seebodenhütte to the Grundbauernhütte on the Kleinveitschalm takes about 2½ hours. In the opposite direction you have to plan a little more time because of the inclines.
