Josef Andreas Jungmann
Josef Andreas Jungmann SJ (born November 16, 1889 in Sand in Taufers , South Tyrol , † January 26, 1975 in Innsbruck ) was an Austrian Jesuit , liturgist and councilor . He is considered a representative of a kerygmatic theology .
Life
After studying in Brixen , Innsbruck , Munich and Vienna , he was ordained a priest in 1913 and entered the Society of Jesus in 1917 . From 1925 he gave lectures on pedagogy , catechetics and liturgy at the Leopold-Franzens-Universität Innsbruck . There he became associate professor in 1930, full professor in 1934, and from 1956 honorary professor of pastoral theology . In the academic year 1953/54 he was rector of the University of Innsbruck. On November 9, 1972, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Salzburg .
He supported the liturgical movement , pleaded for the active participation of the faithful in the liturgy and, through extensive research into the history of the liturgy, shed light on the development and change of Holy Mass over the centuries. In particular, his main work Missarum Sollemnia promoted insight into the existence of liturgical practices, their original meaning and the legitimacy of appropriate renewal.
From 1960 he was a member of the preparatory commission, from 1962 a member of the commission for the liturgical reform of the Second Vatican Council .
Honors
