from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Eberhard Jurgalski (* 8. November 1952 in Salzgitter ) is a German mountain - chronicler and author. He is mainly known for collecting information relating to the eight-thousanders - the mountains with an altitude of over 8000 meters - and their ascents. He publishes this on his website 8000ers.com . In addition, he deals with the systematic mapping of mountains using topographical criteria.

Jurgalski lives in Lörrach in Baden . Although he has never seen the mountains himself, he is counted among the world's leading Himalayan chroniclers.

Life

Eight-thousander chronicles

Since 1981 Jurgalski has been collecting data and facts about the Central Asian high mountains , primarily about the adjacent systems of the Himalayas and Karakoram , where all eight-thousanders are located. From 1982 he worked with the Swede Anders Bolinder, who was considered one of the best experts on the high Asian mountains. For his part, Bolinder had worked with the German Himalayan expert Günter Dyhrenfurth until his death in 1975; He had already continued parts of his work after Dyhrenfurth's retirement in 1969. After Bolinder's death in 1987, Jurgalski continued collecting data and began to transfer facts about the mountains in the Himalayas and Karakoram and their ascents into a database . He combined the information with that of other chroniclers, for example from the publications of the American Alpine Club . Since 1997 he has been in close contact with other chroniclers such as Xavier Eguskitza and Elizabeth Hawley . They complement and correct each other.

Jurgalski presents the eight-thousander on the 8000ers.com website . Here he publishes data and facts about these mountains, including the latest news and statistics on their ascents. Unlike his colleague Hawley, who only records expeditions in the Himalayas, Jurgalski also publishes information about ascents in the Karakoram. The website also deals with the Seven Summits , for example .

Systematic mapping of mountains

In addition to working as a chronicler, Jurgalski also tries to classify the mountains and, in particular, to the orographic question of when a mountain is to be qualified as such and when it is instead just a secondary peak . He criticizes the division of the mountains according to distance dominance and notch height , since rivers are not taken into account here. He believes that mountains should be divided more precisely than just main and minor peaks, and has designed a system to divide the mountains more precisely and fairly. In issue 39 of the Scientific Alpine Association , this system was described as a future-oriented possibility.
