history

Angelo Heilprin , initiator of the American Alpine Club

In May 1901, the naturalist Angelo Heilprin and twelve colleagues met in Philadelphia to determine the goals of the future association. Finally, the AAC was founded in March 1902. The founding members included mountaineers Annie Smith Peck and Fanny Bullock Workman . The first president was Charles Ernest Fay , who was followed by the scientist and writer John Muir .

The American Alpine Journal has been published since 1929 .

The AAC was involved in several important expeditions, such as the unsuccessful attempt to climb K2 in 1939 , the first American ascent of Mount Everest and the first ascent of Mount Vinson in Antarctica in 1966.

Since 1976, the Angelo Heilprin Citation has been awarded annually to people who have made special contributions to the AAC .

In the first decades - in the tradition of the British Alpine Club - new people were only accepted into the AAC at the invitation and suggestion of two members. In the 1980s and again in 1995, the conditions for membership were relaxed. Since then, the number of members has multiplied.

Fritz Wiessner has been honorary members since 1987 and William Lowell Putnam since 2002 .
