The Schneealpe (also Schneealm ) is a mountain range in the Mürzsteg Alps on the Styrian - Lower Austrian border. The highest elevation of the karstified plateau mountain is the Windberg at 1903  m above sea level. A.

Location and landscape

Other peaks besides the Windberg are the Amaißbichl ( 1828  m , in the east on the Styrian-Lower Austrian border), the Schönhaltereck ( 1860  m , west of the Windberg) and the Donnerwand ( 1799  m , in the northwest). The connection to the Rax is made by the wet comb .

Valley locations are Hinternaßwald in the northeast, which belongs to the Nasswaldtal , a side valley of the Schwarza Valley , and Altenberg an der Rax in the east, Kapellen and Neuberg an der Mürz in the south, Mürzsteg and Frein an der Mürz in the west, all in the Mürz valley.

In the north-western area is the headwaters of the Kalten Mürz , the Mürz flows along the entire west . In the south the Altenberger Bach goes to the Mürz. Northeast limited the wet stream the massif, west of the tear stream , its tributary.

The Snow Alps area, together with the Rax and the Schneeberg , belongs to the catchment area of ​​the I. Vienna High Spring Water Pipeline . Drinking water from the Mürz and Salza catchment areas is conveyed to Hinternaßwald through the Schneealpenstollen , built between 1965 and 1968 by the City of Vienna , which was cut directly through the massif.

On the high plateau there is the Schneealpenhaus at an altitude of 1784  m and several alpine huts. On the western edge of the plateau, on the Hinteralm, there is another Alpine Club shelter, the Hinteralmhaus . The wooded mountains and hills north of the Schneealpe are not populated.

Mountain huts

The huts and alpine pastures make up the Schneealpe location in Altenberg an der Rax in the Neuberg an der Mürz community , with the exception of the Michlbauerhütte, which belongs to the Greith village , and the Hinteralmhaus, which is part of Scheiterboden .
