The Waxriegelhaus is a shelter of the Naturfreunde Mürzzuschlag at 1361  m at the foot of the Rax on the Lower Austrian - Styrian border. It is open all year round, offers six of its own beers (wax bar beer), a wide range of dishes and offers overnight accommodation in rooms and mattress dormitories for up to 60 people.

The Waxriegelhaus can be reached in about an hour from Preiner Gscheid . Among other things, it serves as a base when climbing the Heukuppe ( 2007  m ), the highest peak of the Rax. Several ski tours are possible in winter and there is a toboggan run. Other huts in the area are the Habsburghaus , the Seehütte , the Gloggnitzer Hütte , the Otto-Schutzhaus , the Schneealpenhaus and the Karl-Ludwig-Haus .

The Waxriegelhaus was opened in 1923/24 as a replacement for the one opened on August 10, 1919, on August 16/17. January 1923 by an avalanche destroyed Hermann shelter built and inaugurated on 5 October 1924th The house, now located 100 m higher in an avalanche-proof location, had a built-up area of ​​155 m² and offered mattress storage for around 60 people.

After the friends of nature were dissolved under Austrofascism in 1934, the hut was owned by the Bergfreunde association . During the Nazi era it was from the the Hitler Youth belonging to the German Youth Hostel Association manages. After the Second World War, the hut was taken over again by the newly founded Friends of Nature. In 1954 an extensive modernization took place. In 1956 the Waxriegelhaus was connected to the power grid, followed by the development of a spring in 1960 and thus the supply of sufficient running water.
