The Habsburghaus is a refuge of the Austrian Mountain Association section of the PES and is located on the Rax high plateau at 1786  m above sea level. A. on the border between Lower Austria and Styria .

location

The Habsburghaus is located on the Grieskogel, west of the Scheibwaldhöhe ( 1943  m ), the third highest elevation on the Rax plateau. About 2.7 km south of the Habsburg House is the Heukuppe ( 2007  m ), the highest peak of the Rax.

history

The new building was tourist and gastronomical, that the circumlocution location, existing since 1876 Pehoferalmhütte replace. The inauguration ( laying of the keystone ) of the “ vom n.-ö. Mountain clubs (note: this refers to the Lower Austrian Mountain Club ) on the Grieskogel (1800 meters) built anniversary refuge ”took place on Sunday, September 24th, 1899. In the 1960s, work began on expanding the house to its current state, which, however, dragged on into the 1970s due to a lack of funds.

In order to be able to supply the house better, a material ropeway was built from the Reiss valley (Hinternaßwald) in 1963 .

In 1925 a truncated pyramid-shaped monument was erected in memory of Daniel Innthaler , the developer of the bald walls , immediately south of the house .

Jahnkreuz

A small iron cross is just a few minutes' walk from the Habsburg House. It is reminiscent of the hut keeper Karl Jahn, who on February 8, 1919, when he was fetching provisions from the Karl-Ludwig-Haus, got caught in a snow storm on the way back. At minus 22 degrees Celsius and with limited visibility, loaded with 25 kg of food, he lost his bearings and finally froze to death - just a few hundred meters from the Habsburg House. The body was found on February 11; the food was still pinned to the back.
