The Otto-Schutzhaus (also: Erzherzog-Otto-Schutzhaus) is a refuge of the PES and is located on the high plateau of the Rax at 1644  m above sea level. A. .

location

The refuge named after Archduke Otto is located northeast of the Jakobskogel ( 1737  m ), an elevation on the Rax plateau. To the east below is the Rax Alpine Garden, where the picturesque Felsentörl is also located (Törlweg). From the mountain station of the Rax cable car , the shelter can easily be reached on foot via the Rax plateau in an almost flat location, even for inexperienced hikers with a walking time of around half an hour.

Not far from the Otto refuge, a memorial commemorates the alpine photographer Fritz Benesch .

history

The refuge was established in 1886 by the DuÖAV - section built Reichenau and opened after a year of construction 1893 Emil Hatlanek. In 1903, Camillo Kronich took over the lease and held it until 1952. Under Hans Haid von Haidenburg, the shelter was expanded as early as 1908/9 by adding a two-story wing with 22 bedrooms to the north. In 1927 a large veranda was added and in 1931 the Fritz Benesch memorial was erected on the south side . The refuge was completely renovated in 1996 under Josef Zinkl.

The refuge bears the name of Archduke Otto of Austria , whose decision, according to the chronicle, motivated many donors to support the construction of the refuge, including Nathaniel Rothschild , the Liesing stock brewery and the Viennese electrical company Egger & Comp.
