The Thalhof in Reichenau

The Thalhof in Reichenau an der Rax ( Austria ) is a culture and guest house in Reichenau an der Rax.

history

The Thalhof was first mentioned as an estate in 1652. Ignaz Waissnix built it into a considerable hospitality business in the first half of the 19th century. At the beginning of tourism in the Biedermeier period of the 19th century, the Thalhof ranked among the top hotels and descriptions of the place and its surroundings could be found in travel literature.

From 1853 the forest areas around Reichenau were reserved for royal hunts. Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria and his wife Elisabeth went on several hunting trips to Reichenau and stayed at Thalhof.

By 1890 the Thalhof was expanded into a grand hotel . The Thalhof became the country and mountain residence of the Vienna Ringstrasse Society and the nobility as well as numerous artists and writers. Including Sigmund Freud (who wrote here on The Interpretation of Dreams ), Peter Altenberg and Arthur Schnitzler . The latter had a (platonic) relationship with the landlady Olga Waissnix from 1886 until her death in 1897, which was very important to him.

The occupation of the Second World War left severe devastation, from which the buildings only recovered with difficulty.

Since the 1980s, the Thalhof has repeatedly hosted readings and theater performances in summer.

The Thalhof is now a listed building. In July 2019, after an extensive three-year revitalization, it opened as an apartment house in a historical setting.
