Parish church in Prein an der Rax

Prein an der Rax is a town and cadastral community in the market town of Reichenau an der Rax in the Neunkirchen district in Lower Austria .

geography

The loosely built-up alley village is south of Reichenau an der Rax and ends with a scattered settlement on Preiner Gscheid .

history

The place Prein was mentioned in a document in 1094. The place became part of the Reichenau rule in 1140 . From 1885 to 1901 the place received protection with a torrent control . Initially a hamlet, a summer resort with villas, two hotels and inns was created around 1900 . In the interwar period, mainly single-family houses were built.

The road through the village is an old traffic route between the Mürz Valley and the Vienna Basin , the remains of a medieval so-called “Roman bridge” are in the Fuchsgraben. The road was rebuilt in 1904/06 and expanded in 1950.

Culture and sights

  • Catholic parish church Prein an der Rax Pauli Conversion
  • Former vicarage, today vicarage, built in 1751 over partly older buildings (documented in 1534 vicarage)
  • Heimito von Doderer monument by the sculptor Kurt Ingerl (1935–1999) at the fork in the street Grießleiten-Preiner Gscheid, this layered relief was created in 1983.
  • Wayside shrine at Preiner Gscheid
  • The Riegelhof in Prein No. 23 was the summer residence of the Doderer family for decades . The building was built in 1902/03 by Alois Seebacher based on plans by Max von Ferstel . It is a late historical house with a base made of humpback blocks and the superstructure as a wooden block . The crooked roof has a bell stand. Decorative elements such as several chimneys, bay windows, balconies, carving and fretwork decor adorn the building, the style of which has also been adopted from the outbuildings. A number of texts by the Austrian novelist Heimito von Doderer (1896–1966) (e.g. from “ The Strudlhofstiege or Melzer and the Depth of the Years ”) were written on this property and its surroundings. You have the real area around Reichenau and Prein as a model. The building used earlier as the private house of the family of one of Doderer's sister (Astri Stummer, 1893–1989) is largely in its original condition (no central heating, but tiled stoves, own bath house, only a small newly built bath room, etc., drinking water only introduced after 1989). The house has also been rented to guests since 2017 (no restaurant operation), and guided tours are also held.

Prein an der Rax was a popular summer destination for wealthy Viennese families in the 19th and 20th centuries. This can be seen in the development of the area, in which there are a number of villas of late historicism and home style . Quarry stone plinths, wooden balconies, verandas , fretwork or half-timbered construction , central projections , etc. are characteristic.

In Prein an der Rax and the districts of Preinrotte, Griesleiten and Sonnleiten there are also a number of smaller buildings such as chapels, weather houses and wayside shrines. The war memorial was transferred to the church forecourt in 1955. The listed wayside shrine at Preiner Gscheid marks the border between Lower Austria and Styria.
