The parish church of Prein an der Rax is visible from afar on a hill, south of the town of Prein an der Rax in the market town of Reichenau an der Rax in the Neunkirchen district in Lower Austria . The Roman Catholic parish church , consecrated for the feast of Pauli Conversion , belongs to the Deanery Gloggnitz in the vicariate Unter dem Wienerwald of the Archdiocese of Vienna and is under monument protection ( list entry ).

history

The church was initially a branch of the Edlach an der Rax parish church . In the 13th century the church became a vicariate of the parish church of Klamm am Semmering . A church building was documented in 1337. In 1644 the church became an independent parish church.

The dilapidated medieval church was demolished and the current church was built between 1861 and 1865 according to the plans of the architect Josef Fiedler with the builder Andreas Just. An interior restoration took place in 1963/1964 and an exterior restoration in 1996/1997.

architecture

The church has a vestibular neo-Gothic hall and an east tower. The nave and the transept, as well as the drawn-in, somewhat lower choir with two flanking stair turrets are under gable roofs that are identical to the eaves and in the same period. The facades show stepped buttresses and one to three-lane tracery windows. The gable front has a barbed shoulder portal with a tympanum relief of Christ the King between two monks with the coat of arms of Liechtenstein and Kinsky . The tower with corner pinnacles has a pointed helmet over a gable and crenellated wreath. The transept has crossed shoulder portals with putti archivolts and tympanum relief with angels holding a tape.

The inside of the church shows a four-bay nave with a ribbed vault over octagonal services, in the west bay the nave is open like a transept over two floors, in the east there is a timbered wooden gallery on stands with a tracery parapet. The retracted triumphal arch is ogival. The choir is vaulted with cross ribs, there is a sacristy opening with neo-Gothic glazed tracery doors, above are flat arched gallery openings with wooden tracery parapets. The vestibule with delicate cross ribs is square vaulted.

The stained glass is from the second half of the 19th century. It shows the Holy Trinity in the choir from the Tyrolean glass painting establishment (1883), to the side in the choir with two evangelists each by Ferdinand Fliedl from Vienna from the construction period. Otherwise, the stained glass is ornamental, also from the Tyrolean glass painting establishment with 1884, 1896 and 1897.

Furnishing

The neo-Gothic wooden furnishings, with rich carving and tracery décor, are largely from the construction period. The altars and the pulpit were designed by architect Josef Fiedler and executed by Joseph Angeler .

The high altar as a niche retable with the relief Conversion Pauli and on the side carries the statues Johannes Nepomuk and Joseph, in the crack a statue of Mary, in the predella the statuettes Aloysius, Rochus, Franz de Paula, John the Baptist. The side altar from 1870 is a niche retable with the relief of Antonius Eremit and bears the statue Heart of Mary around 1900, restored in 1935 by Emerich Hagauer.

The polygonal stand pulpit from 1867 bears the statuette of Christ as the Good Shepherd on the sound cover.

There is a Pietà from the third quarter of the 18th century. The sculptures Herz Jesu and Antonius von Padua were made around 1900. The crucifix is ​​from the middle of the 18th century.

The Way of the Cross was created after Josef Führich .

The organ in a neo-Gothic case was created by Albert Mauracher (1892).
