The valley is located a good 40 km east of Wiener Neustadt and a good 30 km northwest of Neunkirchen , around 13 km northwest of the Schneeberg. It extends over 9 km between Schwarzau-Markt northwards to Rohr , in the valley floor between 600 and 670  m above sea level. A. Height.

The location includes about 150  scattered houses with about 300 residents. The southern part - up to the hamlet of Gschaiderwirt halfway between the two municipal capitals - belongs to Schwarzau, with 50 buildings and 100 inhabitants, and there forms a separate village and a district according to the municipality. The northern section belongs to Rohr and is much more densely populated with around 100 buildings.

The hamlets of Bichl , Steinach , Wasenhof and Stöckl , as well as the refuge Grubenfranzl on the Klafterbach , the Freudental and Pax on the Paxbach , three left side valleys of the Schwarza on the Handlesberg , also belong to the Schwarzau local area . In the Rohrer part, apart from individual layers, no places are named, the right side valleys there, long side towards Kalte Kuchl and Krumbach am Krumbach, are independent localities.

The Schwarza flows in the valley , and then the Zellbach , although the names are sometimes slightly different: According to official hydrography, the Schwarza is made up of Grüner and Dürrer Schwarza in the Tiefental , and therefore comes from the right (west) into the valley at Gschaiderwirt, to then to flow further south. However, it is also found that the Schwarza comes from Rohr, probably because this is the orographic course of the main valley, as well as because cells Bach are only the localities above Rohr. There is also the name Trauchbach or Tiefentalerbach for the Schwarza to Gschaiderwirt.

The main mountains of the valley are the Handlesberg  ( 1370  m above sea level ) with the Falkenstein and the Edlaberg  ( 1096  m above sea level ) on the right, and the Obersberg (Ahornberg  1467  m above sea level ) with the Sulzberg  ( 1021  m above sea level ) on the left A. ), the Großenberg  ( 1102  m above sea level ) and the Jochart  ( 1266  m above sea level ).

Höllental Straße  B 27 and then Gutensteiner Straße  B 21 lead along the valley .

History, infrastructure and sights

The area could simply have been the original field name of the uppermost Schwarzatal when it was settled in the High Middle Ages. The Schwarzau Nikolauskirche was mentioned as early as 1250/60, and the Rohrer Ulrichskirche , although it was first documented in 1470, is older as a branch of Schwarzau, but the places themselves only appear around 1570 for Rohr and around 1650 for Schwarzau, before that these names are also found primarily as field names.

The area belonged to the sovereign rule as early as 1220 , then Gutenstein Regional Court , and was owned by Hoyos from 1595 until the 19th century . The road through the Höllental was only laid out in 1832, so that Schwarzau could be reached from the north by then. A first division of the local situation is probably that in 1470 there was also a pastor in Rohr, in 1622 both parishes were confirmed. At the latest with the creation of the local parishes in 1848 , the two parts also came to different political districts.

In the far south is the listed manor house of the hammer mill Im Baumgarten (area 20), which was closed in 1855 , otherwise the area is entirely rural. The regulations of the Schwarza date back to the 1960s, before that the valley was very much characterized by flood zones. Today it is a quiet holiday and hiking region. The valley floor in the Schwarzau part still belongs to the European Protected Area Northeastern Randalpen: Hohe Wand – Schneeberg – Rax , a fauna-flora-habitat- area with an ecological focus, and both communities belong completely to the comprehensive landscape protection area Rax – Schneeberg .

  1. The name Talung is customary in the area: “There are several valleys, called Rotten, to which [Note: to the community resp. the village of Schwarzau]: Naßwald, Vois, quarry, Preintal, Markt, Trauch and area. " Geography quote , schwarzauimgebirge.at, accessed April 9, 2015 (same on the homepage as" districts that are only the size of a pack ", enumerated). The name Rotte area already leads to the 3rd land survey around 1870.
