The Obersberg (also Ahornberg ) is a 1467  m above sea level. A. high mountain in the Mürzsteg Alps in Lower Austria .

Location and character

The Obersberg is one of the striking mountains in the Lower Austrian Pre-Alps and at the same time one of its most beautiful viewpoints. It rises in the area of the market town of Schwarzau in the mountains 3 kilometers west of the center. While the Obersberg clearly towers above the low mountain range in the north and northeast, the three significantly higher limestone stocks of the Hochschneeberg , the Raxalpe and Schneealpe , are to the southeast and south of it .

The Obersberg forms the eastern end of a mountain range that extends over 15 kilometers in a west-east direction, the Göller-Gippel-Zug , the connection runs over the Mistelbacher Höhe . The highest peak of the mountain range is the Göller ( 1766  m above sea level ) at its western end. Then follow the Schnalzstein ( 1546  m above sea level ), the Gamsmauer, the striking rocky Gippel ( 1669  m above sea level ), the Gippelmauer, the Preineckkogel ( 1449  m above sea level ) and the Bärenköpfl . Crossing the entire ridge is one of the longest tours in the mountains of Lower Austria.

The summit area of the upper mountain rises close to the tree line approach and is therefore characterized by already slightly loose trees. In particular, some clearings and rock pulpits offer a beautiful panorama. The view from the southern summit slope to the high snow mountain, only 12 kilometers away, is particularly impressive. From the highest point with a wooden summit cross there is a clear view to the west to the Ötscher .

Name of the mountain

Even today, the older name Ahornberg is given for the Obersberg on several maps . This is derived from the sycamore maple , which can be found many times on its slopes. The origin of the former name is unclear.

Waldfreundehütte

Somewhat southeast of the highest point is at 1464  m above sea level. A. the Waldfreundehütte of the Viennese Alpine Society "Waldfreunde". It was put into operation in 1924. The hut is usually open on weekends and public holidays from mid-May to mid-September and offers a total of 38 beds (20 in beds, 18 in the camp).

Climbs

  • The marked normal route to Obersberg begins in Schwarzau am Gebirge and leads first to a mountain shoulder, then along the southern flank of the Hirschkogel and in numerous hairpin bends in the forest to the south-facing summit meadow. The path is not difficult , but sections are steep, especially in the upper part. Walking time: about 2½ hours
  • A further rise in the southeast begins at Eckbauern and leads the homestead Oberberger and Obersbergalm past from the south to the summit. This route is not marked but is well signposted at the crucial points. Walking time: about 2 hours

The ridge path from Obersberg to the west over the Preineckkogel to the Preinecksattel is worthwhile , walking time: about 2 hours. The shortest descent from the saddle leads southeast to the former Triebl inn in the Preintal , walking time: about 1½ hours.
The continuation of the route on the ridge to Göller offers great views, but is reserved for very persistent tourers in a single day.

In winter, Obersberg is a worthwhile and comparatively avalanche-proof destination for ski tours , but it is not often climbed. Start and finish are near Schwarzau in the mountains , but the exact route differs from the summer route.
The Obersberg is also suitable for snowshoe hikes . The cheapest route follows the ascent from the southeast over the Obersberger .
