Tasos Zembylas (* 1962 ) is an Austrian philosopher and cultural scientist.

Life

Zembylas studied philosophy, art history and sociology at the University of Vienna from 1991 to 1997. After obtaining his master's degree, he was a research fellow at the International Research Center for Cultural Studies in Vienna. After completing his doctorate in philosophy, he worked as a freelance scientist. During this time he carried out several commissioned studies, primarily in the field of occupational and educational research, and was a lecturer at the University of Vienna and at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna, where he taught aesthetics and art sociology. In 1999 he became university assistant and, after his habilitation, professor for cultural management at the Institute for Cultural Management and Cultural Studies at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. In 2009 he was visiting professor at Zeppelin University in Friedrichshafen . In 2010 he moved to the Institute for Music Sociology at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna .

research

Zembylas' focus is on cultural management, practical epistemology and public cultural funding.

A fundamental question of art philosophy that Tasos Zembylas pursues revolves around the formation process of the concept of art . Zembylas approaches this question by focusing not only on linguistic statements and theories about contemporary art, but at least as much on the description and analysis of social negotiation processes and practices in the art world.

The close connection between art and social practice as well as between cultural business and social structures drew Zembylas' attention to cultural, social, political and economic theories of the cultural sector. The goal of his theoretical endeavors is therefore to develop an interdisciplinary approach to the most important research questions in cultural management studies .

In addition to theoretical work, Zembylas carried out several empirical studies, primarily on public funding for culture in Austria. The focus was on the question of the legal standards of the cultural funding process and the effects of the public sector's allocation policy.

From 2006 to 2008, Zembylas and the literary scholar Claudia Dürr examined the literary writing process from a knowledge-theoretical perspective. The focus of research interest was the development and effectiveness of artistic-practical knowledge and the role of professional experience. The project leads to a general epistemology of artistic practice.

Most recently he published a literary travelogue about Athos. In it, he addressed, among other things, the economic management of the Holy Monastery of Vatopedi, which made headlines in the international press in connection with a property scandal in 2008.
