History and infrastructure

In the 19th century there was a smelting furnace in Karlgraben for iron mining in Neuberg, which belonged to the kk  Montan-Aerar , the state mining administration.

The city of Vienna acquired the springs in Karlgraben as early as 1899 in order to connect them to the (I.) Vienna high spring water pipeline . The discussion was about a pipeline through the Naßkamm near Altenberg to the source area in the Naßwaldtal or through the Preiner Gscheid with a connection at Hirschwang. At the time, these projects were not technically feasible. Development only made sense in the 1960s, and from 1965 to 1969 the Schneealpenstollen was driven under the mountain range through to Naßwald, 9½ kilometers long and about 1000 meters below its summit corridor. The construction was difficult and hindered by severe water ingress. At the same time, another tunnel was cut westwards, the 1.2 kilometer long Scheibling tunnel to the Tirolbach in Krampen, and then the Lärchstein tunnel to Lanau. The connection of the Pfannbauern spring in the Salzatal valley followed under the Wetterin , and it merged with the second Viennese high spring water pipeline there.
