The Wetterin ( 1530  m above sea level ) is a mountain in the Mürzsteg Alps , ten kilometers south of Mariazell in northern Styria . At the foot of Ostkamms the place are Niederalpl (1200 m) and the Wetterinalm , west Wegscheid (821 m) and the deep groove of Mariazellerstraße B 20 via the Styrian Seeberg that the Mariazellerland - past the Hochschwabmassiv with the - Mura combines .

Unusual mountain shape and geology

The Wetterin mountain, shaped like a roof, is heavily forested, except for its two kilometer long, precisely west-east running ridge, the western end of which is formed by the almost equally high Kaiserstein. The southern flank is a very evenly sloping steep slope down to the Niederalpl pass road and the narrow side valley of the Dürrwaldgraben (940 m). Under the Kaiserstein it has a few short embankments characterized by rock thrusts. The north flank, on the other hand, is interspersed with rock faces and slopes down to the Jagerbauergraben (800 m) and the Sattelleiten (1000 m), beyond which a confused limestone landscape rises up to the west and south walls of the Tonion (1,699 m).

This difference in landforms is caused by the fact that the old rocks of the Grauwackenzone were pushed a few kilometers into the Northern Limestone Alps during the Alpine orogeny .

Mountain hiking and skiing area

The Wetterin offers beautiful views of the Hohe Veitsch (1,981 m), the Hochschwab (2,277 m) and the Schneealpe (1,903 m).

The north-south long-distance hiking trail and the Styrian Mariazellerweg pass east of the mountain ; the summit itself can be reached from the Wetterinalm via an unmarked path. The southwest half of the massif between the Kaiserstein and the Schafmäuern is only passable on some forest roads . The foot of these steep slopes is formed by the Aschbach (village of the same name at 840 m above sea level), which drains the rainy area to the north and west to the Salza .

Because of its guaranteed snow and varied landscape, a small ski area with a total of eight kilometers of slopes was set up around 30 years ago east of the Wetterin between the village of Niederalpl and the pass , which is now equipped with a modern four-seater chairlift, three drag lifts and a practice lift. It is designed to be family-friendly and in deliberate contrast to a ski circus .

The area is an insider tip among nature-conscious snowshoe and ski touring enthusiasts, to which the accessibility up to 1200 m contributes significantly. Because of the forest there is hardly any danger of avalanches, but there are no rest stops either.

A radio transmitter for the Viennese mountain spring pipeline was built near the summit in 1999 , but because of its sensitive location in the nature reserve, it is designed as a "camouflage wing" and with a solar system.
