Signals is the ninth studio album by the Canadian rock band Rush . It was released in 1982.
Signals followed the successful Moving Pictures album . Stylistically, it continued the band's path into new musical realms. Technical elements of electronics played a clearly audible role, so in addition to synthesizers an electric violin (under the title “Losing It”) was used. The individual tracks no longer reached the length of previous Rush albums because the instrumental passages were heavily compressed. Signals climbed to # 10 on the Billboard album charts and was awarded platinum status in the US in 1982 for one million records sold.
As usual with Rush, the lyrics are by drummer Neil Peart , while the other two Rush members Alex Lifeson and Geddy Lee wrote the music. The opening track “Subdivisions”, about the forlornness of youth in the suburbs, was on the permanent list of titles at Rush concerts for many years, while “New World Man” became a success on the radio. The text of "Losing It" deals with the loss of artistic creativity in old age - Neil Peart probably had Ernest Hemingway in particular in mind: "For you the blind who once could see, the bell tolls for thee ..."
The last track “Countdown” describes the start of the space shuttle “Columbia” in 1981 , which the space-loving band attended. Excerpts from the radio traffic during the maiden flight can be found processed in the song.
Signals is the last album Rush worked on with producer Terry Brown, who co-produced every Rush album since 1975's Fly by Night .
