Verona Metro

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Metro Verona is only in the pin Gernrode and in Verona revered saint .

The relics of Holy Metro were stolen in Verona in 961 and brought to Gernrode by Margrave Gero . Metro became the patron saint of the collegiate church alongside Maria , Peter and Cyriakus . The consecration of his altar, which stood in the west choir, was celebrated in Gernrode on August 23rd. The relics were removed from the church during the Reformation .

A breviary from 1487 printed in Halberstadt contains the only Office for the saint that has been handed down in full with all the chants, supplications and prayers, and a short vita in six lessons .

Because of its legend, Metro is considered a saint of sin. The Vita reports that Metro chained itself to a stone in front of the Church of San Vitale in Verona to atone for the sin of incest . He threw the key into the river Adige . When it was found in the belly of a fish after seven years, its sins were forgiven. This motif comes back later in Gregorius von Hartmann von Aue , the Metro legend could therefore be a precursor story.

The details of the vita can also be found in Gernrode on the Gero Tumba from 1519. There Metro is shown with an ankle cuff and the fish with the key in its mouth, next to Saint Cyriacus with a little devil on a chain.
