Clockwork Angels is the 19th and final studio album by the Canadian rock band Rush . It was released on Roadrunner Records in June 2012 .

history

The album was recorded in April 2010 at Blackbird Studio in Nashville , Tennessee , and from October to December 2011 at Revolution Recording in Toronto , Ontario , Canada . Nick Raskulinecz was co-producer and mixer . Already in February 2009 Alex Lifeson had indicated that Raskulinecz, who had already worked for the band at Snakes & Arrows , would work again as co-producer on the next album. However, he denied that a concept album was planned. In 2010 Caravan / BU2B was released as a single.

In February 2012, author Kevin J. Anderson , a friend of Neil Peart's, announced that he would write a novel for the album. He also revealed content-related details on the concept of the album: "In a young man's quest to follow his dreams, he is caught between the grandiose forces of order and chaos. He travels across a lavish and colorful world of steampunk and alchemy, with lost cities, pirates, anarchists, exotic carnivals, and a rigid Watchmaker who imposes precision on every aspect of daily life. " The novel was published on September 4, 2012.

The album reached number one in Canada and number two in the US.

criticism

Thom Jurek from Allmusic awarded 4 out of 5 stars. He wrote that the album shows why the band's fan base is growing after 36 years: "Its musical athleticism and calisthenic discipline are equaled only by its relentless creative drive and its will to express it in a distinct musical language."
