The Vordernbergertal is located in the Leoben district in Styria . It stretches from the Präbichl to the district capital Leoben along the Vordernbergerbach , which rises on the Handlalm on the Präbichl and flows into the Mur in Leoben . The communities Vordernberg , Trofaiach , Sankt Peter-Freienstein and Donawitz (a district of Leoben) have a share in the Vordernbergertal . The valley has around 18,000 inhabitants.

climate

The Vordernbergertal lies in the alpine climatic zone. The inversion ratios are determined by the high fog of the Mur valley. The annual average temperatures are 7 ° C. There are around 140 days of frost a year, with the climate becoming milder towards the Mur. The annual precipitation averages 700–850 mm depending on the location.

Settlement history

The earliest known larger settlement in the Vordernbergertal was a hilltop settlement from the Urnfield Age on the 886 meter high Kulm near Trofaiach, which existed from around 850 BC to around 750 BC. There are finds from the Roman era from the Trofaiach district of Laintal and from the Leoben district of Donawitz. From 600 AD, Alpine Slavs settled in the Vordernbergertal, which is indicated by many place and field names. From then on there is a real continuity in terms of settlement history. After Carantania was taken over by Bavaria and later by the Franks, the Franconian county constitution was introduced after 822 AD . Only after the establishment of the German manorial rule and the church organization originating from the Archdiocese of Salzburg did strong German immigration begin after 955 to the areas south of the main Alpine ridge , especially from the Bavarian region. The Vordernbergertal belonged to the County of Leoben (first mentioned 904), whose administrative center was initially in the lower Vordernbergertal. The first administrative center was in today's Sankt Peter-Freienstein and was only moved to Leoben under the Traungau rivers .

In documents from the Middle Ages the valley is called Liupinatal. The Vordernbergerbach was called "Lewben", later "Liuben" or "Leuben". These names are derived from the Slavic Lijub, which means as much as dear, lovely. This is where the name of the city of Leoben originated.

economy

From the late Middle Ages to the 20th century and still today, the economy is mainly determined by the smelting of the iron ore extracted from the nearby Erzberg and the further processing of the pig iron . The largest company in the Vordernbergertal is the Donawitz plant of Voestalpine , which employs around 2000 people. In addition, the economy is predominantly shaped by small businesses. But there are also agricultural and forestry operations that deal with cattle breeding , grassland and wood management.
