The Eisenerzer Alps are noisy Alpine Club classification of the Eastern Alps (AVE) of the southern part of the Ennstaler Alps . They are separated from the Gesäuse Mountains in the north by the Radmer and Johnsbachgraben and the Kaiserau . The eastern border runs along the Erzbach and Vordernberger valleys . In the south they extend to the Mur and in the west they are bordered by the Liesing and Paltental , where the important Alpine traverse runs over the Schoberpass (849 m). In contrast to the limestone stocks of the Ennstal Alps, however, they belong to the Grauwackenzone and are accordingly often viewed as a separate mountain range. The highest peak is the Gößck ( 2214  m ) in the Reiting massif (southeast of the mountains). The most famous mountain, however, is the Eisenerzer Reichenstein ( 2165  m ), named after the historic mining town on the Erzberg . This is mainly so that it is not confused with the Admonter Reichenstein in the Gesäuse .

The mountain groups of the Eisenerzer Alps

Eisenerzer Alps main ridge

The straight main ridge of the Eisenerzer Alps stretches over a length of about 60 kilometers: from Selzthal near Liezen in the west to the Präbichl pass road ( 1226  m ) near Eisenerz in the east. The Eisenerzer-Alpen-Höhenweg , which includes the Theklasteig and the Eduard-Girstmayer-Steig , is an almost continuous panoramic path over its ridge - an insider tip for mountain hikers who are looking for lonely paths, beautiful views and untouched nature. However, this route requires a lot of stamina from the hiker and, in some striking places, a head for heights and surefootedness . Various hiking guides indicate a hiking time of 12-14 hours for the approximately 40-kilometer Eisenerzer-Alpen-Höhenweg between the Mödlinger Hütte and Reichensteinhütte bases . The entire route offers excellent views of the Gesäuse Mountains in the north, the Hochschwab in the northeast and the Rottenmann and Seckauer Tauern in the south. From most of the peaks the view goes to the Dachstein and the Toten Gebirge in the west and the Grazer Bergland with the Fischbacher Alps in the east. The area above the Gaishorn window near the Treffner Alm not far from the Mödlinger Hütte is geologically interesting . Here, the Grauwackenzone of the Eisenerzer Alps meets the limestone mountains of the Admonter Reichenstein group .

The Eisenerzer Reichenstein

In 1896 the Austrian-Alpine Montangesellschaft sold the Upper Styrian Section of the German and Austrian Alpine Club , later the Leoben Section of the Austrian Alpine Club , a floor space of 1200 m² on the Eisenerzer Reichenstein to build a shelter. The Alpine Mining Society later supported the section with advice and action. In recognition of this help, Bergdirektor Emil Sedlaczek was elected the first honorary member of the section on the occasion of the opening of the Reichensteinhütte in 1898. When the path from Eisenerzer Reichenstein to Wildfeld was completed in 1900, this path was named Theklasteig after Thekla Sedlaczek, the wife of the mountain director . The pathway from Wildfeld to Zeiritzkampel was opened in 1923. It was named after Eduard-Girstmayer-Steig , the meritorious treasurer of the Leoben Alpine Club section for many years .

The most important peaks in the main ridge are from west to east:

  • Dürrenschöberl ( 1737  m ): beautiful panoramic view, mountain mass in summer
  • Lahngangkogel ( 1778  m ): popular ski mountain, one of the local mountains of the Oberst-Klinke-Hütte with a beautiful view of the Ennstal, Grimming and Dachstein.
  • Spielkogel ( 1731  m ): one of the Mödlinger Hütte's local mountains
  • Blaseneck ( 1969  m ): nice view of the Gesäuse mountains
  • Leobner ( 2036  m ): westernmost two-thousand- meter peak in the main ridge with a beautiful panoramic view, impressive flora
  • Leoben Wall (up to 1900  m ): brittle wall formations with clearly reddish rock, a sequence of iron minerals in the often ore-containing rock of the Grauwackenzone. Please do not confuse it with the Leoben Wall near the Präbichl , which already belongs to the Hochschwab.
  • Lahnerleitenspitze ( 2027  m ): pronounced shape with beautiful rock ridges
  • Zeiritzkampel ( 2125  m ): an impressive mountain figure rich in wild and flowered; distinctive elevation; far-reaching view
  • Far soils elevations (around 1800  m ): this area is surrounded by beautiful raised bogs and marshy waters
  • Wildfeld ( 2043  m ): Mountain with rocky, brittle walls - classic ski touring mountain - as there are too many ski tourers on some winter weekends, park regulations had to be strictly observed for the Trofaiacher Gössgraben.
  • Stadelstein ( 2070  m ): wide panoramic view
  • Schwarzenstein ( 1953  m ): promising, but not easy to climb because of its fragile rocks
  • Eisenerzer Reichenstein - west summit ( 2143  m ): good view
  • Eisenerzer Reichenstein - main summit ( 2165  m ): second highest mountain in the Eisenerzer Alps; very beautiful view; only 15 minutes from the Reichensteinhütte , all approaches require surefootedness; less suitable as a climbing mountain because of the brittle walls.
  • Vordernbergermauer ( 1971  m ) with Fahnenköpfl ( 1648  m )

Some mountain tours can easily be created over 3–4 peaks, e.g. B. the route Wildfeld , Stadel-, Schwarzenstein and Hochstein , which is 15–20 km long depending on the ascent, but has relatively little height differences along the ridges . From the southeast you can use the long Trofaiacher Gössgraben to get quickly to the heart of the main ridge of the Eisenerzer Alps. Some path variants can also be carried out away from the path markings over steep meadows and gentle ridges.

Reiting

The Reiting is a mountain range on the southern edge of the Eisenerzer Alps. With its four peaks - Gßeck ( 2214  m ), Grieskogel ( 2148  m ), Kahlwandspitze ( 2049  m ) and Klauen ( 1849  m ) -, twenty partly desert ditches and steep forest lines, it is almost a small mountain range in its own right.

Hochkogel-Kaiserschild group

The Kaiserschild ( 2085  m above sea level ) is a broad mountain in the west of the town of Eisenerz and forms a double peak with the slightly higher Hochkogel ( 2105  m above sea level ).

Erzberg

Eisenerz with the ore mountain

The Erzberg lies on the eastern edge of the group. It is considered to be the largest siderite deposit (FeCO 3 , spate iron stone) in the world, but due to its mixing with other ores, it only has an iron content of 20–40%.

It is still unclear when iron ore mining began on the Erzberg; there is no scientific evidence for the ore mining that is often claimed in Roman times. It has been proven that iron was mined on the Erzberg at least since the High Middle Ages. In the early modern period, the dismantling was the "armory" of the Habsburg monarchy and supplied the small iron industry in the entire Austrian-Inner-Austrian core area ( Eisenwurzen , Upper Styria ). During this time, large areas of the mountains were deforested in order to provide fuel for smelting. Iron mining experienced a great boom in the 19th century, and the mined ores have since been transported to the steel works in Leoben and Linz via the Rudolfsbahn . In 1986 the underground mining was stopped and a show mine was set up in the tunnel. The ore deposit should last for a few more decades.

Huts

tourism

The area is accessible to tourists with numerous hiking trails, but with the Reichensteinhütte only offers a managed mountain hut with overnight accommodation. The Eisenerzer Alps are somewhat overshadowed by their larger neighbors: the Niedere Tauern , the Gesäuse mountains and the Hochschwab . The Grete-Klinger-Steig , which leads over the ridges of the Vordernberg walls and requires a head for heights and surefootedness, is very popular , but has excellent safety ropes.

In the outskirts ( Präbichl , Wald am Schoberpaß , Kaiserau ) there are small winter sports areas that offer opportunities for alpine and cross-country skiing .
