The Mödlinger Hütte is an alpine club hut of the Mödling section of the Austrian Alpine Club in the Ennstal Alps , between the Gesäuse and Eisenerzer Alps ( Styria ).

history

The hut was opened on May 31, 1914 after ten years of planning and construction. From 1996 to 2008, a total of 530,000 euros were invested in the renovation of the hut (for example water supply system, fully biological small sewage disposal system, vegetable oil-powered combined heat and power unit (CHP) with the associated ancillary devices including a photovoltaic system).

location

The Mödlinger Hütte is located at an altitude of 1523  m on the Treffner Alm, southeast of the Admonter Reichenstein (Gesäuse). The hut is officially assigned to the Gesäuse, but, strictly speaking, is located in the ore-containing Grauwackenzone of the Eisenerzer Alps . Opposite the Johnsbach valley, the impressive mountain figure of the Großer Ödstein rises in the Hochtor group. A toll road leads from the southern village of Gaishorn am See in Paltental to a forest car park. From here it's a 30-minute walk to the hut.

Alfred Stieg has been managing the hut together with his wife Annabell since the 2016/17 winter season.

Arrival and ascent

  • The easiest way to arrive by car is via the A9. Coming from the west to the Trieben exit and from the east to the Treglwang exit. From these exits it is only a few kilometers to Gaishorn. A toll road leads from this village to the forest car park below the hut. From the forest parking lot it is 30 minutes to the hut. Gaishorn can also be reached by train; the ascent from Gaishorn leads over forest paths and forest roads and takes about 2 ½ hours.
  • A road branches off from Gesäusestraße between Admont and Hieflau to the mountain village of Johnsbach . From the Johnsbach train station it is about 1 ½ hours to walk to Johnsbach; this hiking trail leads through a wild mountain landscape, which as a legend trail provides information about the petrified figures. The ascent to the hut takes about two hours from Johnsbach.
  • From Admont a mountain road leads south over the Nagelschmiedesattel into the Paltental ; There is also a post bus (although rarely) on this street. Shortly before the top of the pass, a toll road runs over the Kaiserau to the Oberst-Klinke-Hütte . The walking time from the Oberst-Klinke-Hütte is about two hours.
  • In the past, the hut could also be reached from Gaishorn on a very scenic hiking trail through the Flitzenschlucht to the Vorderen Flitzenalm in three hours. The climbing system in the Flitzenschlucht has now fallen into disrepair, most of the bridges have collapsed and the path has been eroded in many places or relocated by fallen trees.

Tours

The Mödlinger Hütte in front of the peaks of the Sparafeld and the Admonter Reichenstein

The ascent to Admonter Reichenstein ( 2251  m ) is already a demanding mountain tour via its classic normal route , which requires mountain experience, surefootedness and a head for heights . A key point is the Herzmann-Kupfer-Platte (climbing grade II ).

A beautiful, motivational hiking tour leads to the Oberst-Klinke-Hütte in 1 ½ hours .

The hike to the Spielkogel ( 1,731  m ) is also easy . This hike can be continued as the mood takes you on the ridge path of the Eisenerzer Alps.

A complete ascent of the entire Eisenerzer-Alpen-Höhenweg is a challenge for well -trained mountain hikers. The path takes 12 to 14 hours to the Reichensteinhütte on Eisenerzer Reichenstein ( 2165  m ).

Climbing opportunities

The hut is the starting point for demanding climbing tours in the Admonter Reichenstein group. Well-known classic routes are:

  • Crossing the Totenköpfl with the east ridge ascent to the Admonter Reichenstein, ( III )
  • Admonter Reichenstein northeast pillar, ( VI-, V + )
  • Sparafeld ( 2247  m ) south pillar, ( V-, IV +, IV )

Note: The specified tours are alpine activities and not sport climbing tours.
