The Paltental is a side valley of the Ennstal in Upper Styria . The valley is home to six communities with a total of 13,853 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2018)

history

Until the early Middle Ages , the valley was at least partly Slavic . The name also indicates that. The earliest written document is from 1041 and is "Baltal". The name goes back to the Slavic bolto (swamp). The valley is likely to have been settled by Bavarians in the 8th century or earlier .

geography

The valley branches off from the Middle Ennstal to the southeast near Selzthal and is traversed by the eponymous river Palten . The transition to the Ennstal is formed by a narrow valley. It ends at the Schoberpass (849 m). The town of Rottenmann is the capital and largest municipality in the valley . In the south it is bordered by the Rottenmanner Tauern , in the north by the foothills of the Eisenerzer Alps .

The Paltental, together with the Liesingtal, which adjoins the Schoberpass, forms the Palten-Liesing Valley , formerly known as the Kammertal . This alpine long valley furrow is also an important north-south traffic connection. In the landscape structure of the state of Styria, the Paltental bears the number T4.

The shape of the valley was shaped by an extension of the Pleistocene Enns Glacier . The flat and more even valley floor is formed over by lateral alluvial cones and moor cones at intervals . The valley floor is filled with fluvial sediments.

Most of the valley floor has been protected landscape area No. 45 Paltental since 1981.

places

The following communities belong to the Paltental (the residents in brackets, as of January 1, 2020):

These include historical communities, today cadastral communities :

The municipalities of Lassing and Selzthal are only partly part of the Paltental due to the different drainage into the Enns and Paltental.

traffic

In terms of traffic, the valley serves as one of the connecting axes between Styria, Upper Austria and Salzburg; the Pyhrn motorway A9 runs through the Paltental to the Bosruck tunnel , along with the Rudolfsbahn , which connects Graz with Linz and Salzburg.
