The Palten , called Schoberbach in the upper reaches , is a 37 km long, south-eastern and right tributary of the Enns in Styria .

The Palten rises in the Paltenkar on the Speikkogel ( 1992  m above sea level ) in the Eisenerzer Alps directly above the Schober Pass , in the municipality of Wald . It flows in a north-westerly direction and flows east of Selzthal across from Pürgschachen , already in the municipality of Admont , into the Enns .

The Palten flows through the Paltental with its main town, the town of Rottenmann . Together with the Liesingtal east of the Schoberpass, the valley forms a common furrow in Upper Styria between the Seckauer Tauern , the Rottenmanner Tauern and the Eisenerzer Alps . The Austrian Pyhrn motorway A 9 and the Rudolfsbahn run in this valley train, which used to be called the Kammertal .

Among many small mountain streams and drainage ditches, notable tributaries are the Flitzenbach , which flows into the river at Gaishorn am See , the Triebenbach , which flows into Trieben and the Strechenbach , which flows into the Palten in the west of the town of Rottenmann near Strechau . The Palten also flows through the dammed Gaishorn lake .
