geography

Geographical location

Wald am Schoberpass lies on the Schoberpass between the Niedere Tauern and the Eisenerzer Alps . The pass separates the catchment areas of the Palten , which drains to the Enns , and the Liesing , whose water flows into the Mur .

The Schoberpass is the lowest alpine crossing in Austria. The water-dividing point is so low here that only the draining waters reveal the pass crossing.

Community structure

The municipality includes the following three localities (population in brackets as of January 1, 2020):

  • Liesing (20)
  • Melling (2)
  • Forest on the Schober Pass (521)

The community consists of the three cadastral communities Liesing, Melling and Wald.

history

The place has changed its name several times over the years. The names Vualde 925 and Gaizzerwald 1074 are documented for the first time. The municipality has only had its official name, Wald am Schoberpaß , which is valid today, since 1945.

In 1849 the municipalities of Melling, Vorwald and Unterwald were combined into a single municipality. The individual mayors can only be fully traced from 1892. It is no longer possible to determine who was the first mayor.
