Johann Krainz

Johann Krainz , (pseudonym: Hans von der Sann ; born September 6, 1847 in Cilli , Lower Styria , † April 24, 1907 in Graz ) was an Austrian teacher , folklorist , legend researcher, storyteller and writer .

Life

Johann Krainz's father was a teacher at the kk Unterreal- and Hauptschule in Cilli. Johann graduated from this school and then attended the teacher training college in Marburg an der Drau . After studying and training, he worked at various schools in Styria . Places of activity and life stations of his career were Leoben , Kalwang , Oberwölz , Knittelfeld and Eisenerz . His last place of employment was Graz- Andritz , where he also retired in 1905. On April 24, 1907, the teacher, folk researcher and man of letters died in Graz.

Literary work

Johann Krainz also published under the pseudonym "Hans von Sann". He chose this name as an expression of his attachment to his place of birth, the Sannstadt Cilli . His affection was for local history. In his spare time he constantly researched church, local and manorial archives in the area and collected historical material. On long hikes that led him back and forth through Styria, Johann Krainz collected the folk tales “the green mark”. Several books emerged from his research and collection.

In addition, Krainz also wrote historical essays, folk treatises and short stories for the “ Grazer Zeitung ”, the “ Wiener Abendpost ” and other magazines. He made a considerable contribution to the reference work " Topographical-statistical Lexicon of Styria " published by Josef Andreas Janisch 1878–1885 . Johann Krainz was also involved in the so-called Kronprinzenwerk : “The Austro-Hungarian Monarchy in Words and Images”. For the seventh volume relating to Styria, published in 1890, he wrote the article: Volksleben, Sitten und Sagen der Deutschen.
