Verkhnyaya Pyschma ( Russian Верхняя Пышма ) is a city in Sverdlovsk Oblast ( Russia ) with 59,749 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The city is located on the eastern edge of the Middle Urals about 15 km north of the oblast capital Yekaterinburg on the upper reaches of the Pyschma , a right tributary of the Tura .
Administratively, the city is directly subordinate to the Oblast. The town of Verkhnyaya Pyschma is subordinate to the neighboring town of Sredneuralsk to the west .
history
Verkhnyaya Pyschma was built on the site of the village of Pyschminskoje founded in 1660 . In 1854 the Pyschminsko-Klyuchevoye copper ore deposit was established here . In connection with the sinking of a first shaft in 1856, the miners' settlement Medny Rudnik (Russian for copper mine ) was created, which received city rights in 1946 under its current name (Russian for Upper Pyschma ).

Culture and sights
The Russian Orthodox Dormition Cathedral ( Uspensky Cathedral ) and the Ismail Al-Bukhari Mosque as well as a sports palace and a swimming pool have been built in Verkhnyaya Pyschma in recent years with the support of the local mining companies . An ice rink and building for a branch of the State Technical University of the Urals (Yekaterinburg) are under construction (as of 2007). Since 1989 the city has had a history museum specializing in metallurgy and mining. In 2005, the Military Museum of Combat Glory of the Urals (Boyevaya slawa Urala) opened, one of the largest of its kind in Russia. The collection includes military equipment, three-dimensional models of weapons, as well as awards and badges.
economy
Verkhnyaya Pyschma is an important center of the metallurgical and chemical industry. In the city u. a. one of the largest mining companies in Russia, the Uralskaja Gorno-Metallurgitscheskaja Kompanija (UGMK, also English Ural Mining and Metallurgical Company , UMMC; nationwide over 100,000 employees) has its headquarters. The Uralelektromed plant in Verkhnyaya Pyschma, which belongs to the group, produces copper, nickel, lead, brass, bronze, gold and silver.
The locomotive manufacturer Ural Lokomotiven has existed since 2006.
