history
Since the 18th century in the area of today's Woltchansk a settlement was known under the name Walt saddle or Woltscha later Lesnaja Woltschanka based on the name of the current flowing here and east in Sosva opens creek Woltschanka (adaptation of a Russian pre-designation of a Derivation from the Russian wolk for wolf ).
In 1942 the mining of the lignite deposits discovered here began to supply the power plants and smelting works in the area (such as Karpinsk, Krasnoturjinsk , Serow ). During the war and in the first post-war years, inmates of a branch of the Krasnoturjinsk Bogoslowski penal camp , including deported Soviet citizens of German descent , as well as prisoners of war, were used in coal mining, construction, ammunition production and forestry around Volchansk .
In 1956 the place received city rights under its current name. As a result, however, coal production declined and importance such as population decreased significantly.
