The Wolchansk tram opened on December 31, 1951 and connects the Siberian city of Volchansk ( Sverdlovsk Oblast ) with the Lesnaya Wolchanka district. The tram runs on a gauge of 1524 millimeters ( Russian broad gauge ) and consists of a single stretch of about seven kilometers. This is single-track and has the character of an interurban tram .

In 1953 an approximately 16-kilometer route to Karpinsk was opened. This overland route was shut down in 1965 and converted to buses. Built the tram to the settlement Volchansk that as a working class neighborhood of the nearby lignite - opencast serves, with the nearest train station in Lesnaya Woltschanka to connect. The city's population fell from originally 36,000 at the height of coal mining to 14,900 in 1989 and further reduced to around 10,000 today. This was accompanied by a significant decrease in the volume of tram traffic.

business

Today there are no longer any diversions , which is why the route is only served by one hourly course in regular operation. However, since May 2010 there has been a shutdown from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Of the 12 stops along the route, seven are served according to the schedule, all others are stops on demand. At the beginning of 2008 there were a total of five different types of tram. These include two vehicles of the type KTM-5M3 (71-605A) , a KTM-8M , a KTM-19 and a SpTR 71-402. The KTM-8M arrived in Volchansk in 2001, but suffered irreparable damage in 2004, is now available, but has not been used since then.

All vehicles draw their electricity by means of lyra bars from the overhead contact line, which is consistently designed as a single contact line . At the western entrance to Lesnaja Woltschanka, the tram line crosses a siding of a wood processing company at the same level.

The tram depot

The depot is located on the southern outskirts of Volchansk in the area of the turning loop of the route. Measured against the population of 9,900 in 2010, Woltschank is the smallest city in Russia with an independent tram company.

The Volchansk tram will continue to operate in April 2017, but its existence is at great risk due to the further decline in the number of inhabitants in the catchment area (around 9,100 at the beginning of 2016). A single vehicle of the type 71-619 KT is currently in use, which has been in Volchansk since 2008.
