The Rostov-on-Don tram is a tram network in the Russian metropolis of Rostov-on-Don on the Black Sea . In addition to the tram network, local public transport in Rostov consists of trolleybus and omnibus lines, some of which also run along former tram routes. Marshrutkis also operate . Rostov is the only city in Russia that has a standard gauge network with appropriate rolling stock; All other Russian tram systems, with the exception of a few companies running in meter gauge, have rail networks in the Russian broad gauge of 1524 millimeters. The length of the rail network in 2004 was 82 km, of which 37.68 km are currently a line route.

From 1887 a horse-drawn tram operated in the city , which was converted to electrical operation on January 2, 1902 . It is one of the oldest operating companies in Russia. Unlike many other cities, the Russian Revolution had no impact on the operation or development of the tram. In 1918 it was merged with the route network of the neighboring municipality of Nakhichevan on the Don , which was incorporated into Rostov ten years later. At the same time, the network was also extended to the urban area west of the Temernik River .

While there were only four lines with the horse-drawn tram, in 1925 there were already six. During the war years 1941 to 1943 there was an interruption in supply due to German wartime influence.

From 1957 the Czech company ČKD Tatra supplied the city with trams. Tatra became the first manufacturer to be commissioned by Soviet companies for delivery. The selection was made because Tatra already had experience in standard-gauge vehicles.

1990 was the year of the largest stretch of line with a total of 120 km with a total of 18 lines. Since then, many of the ailing routes have been closed. Two of the four depots were also abandoned. In 1998 the network was further reduced. In 2006, a master plan was drawn up to make operations more economical and to have a Metrotram system built up by 2025. These plans were only half-heartedly implemented until 2018.

Tram and trolleybuses are coordinated in their routes and complement each other accordingly. In 2018 there are two tram depots Lengorod and Proletarskoje of the so-called Proletarian tram depot : The older area is located in the west of the city on the line 7, in the east there is a second depot on the line 1.

While lines 1, 6, 7 and 10 each have two terminal stops, line 4 runs as a ring line around the city center.

The operation was carried out with partly very old material. In 2008, 72 railcars were in use, most of which have now been parked, and in 2018 there were still 23. There are no sidecars , but 7 technical auxiliary cars .
