The Temernik ( Russian Темерни́к also Temernitschka, Russian Темерни́чка ) is a small right tributary of the Don in Rostov Oblast .

geography

Of the total length of 35.5 kilometers of the river, 16 km are in the Rostov city area. The source of the Temernik in the Myasnikovsky district on the northern outskirts of Rostov is the controllable outflow of a small reservoir called the Rostov Sea ( Russian Ростовское море ), the main tributary of which is the Kamyshevacha ( Russian Камышеваха ). The Temernik, which is very polluted due to its location within the metropolitan area of the tenth largest Russian city (Rostov agglomeration with 2.16 million inhabitants), has an average gradient of 2.3%, is about 10 m wide and 30 to 80 cm deep . It collects the natural surface water of the northern and western Rostov districts.

history

The Temernik Customs ( Russian Темерницкая таможня ) associated with the city's foundation in 1749 owes its name to the river.

Between the zoo on the left bank and the botanical garden on the right bank one and a half kilometers in a south-westerly direction, 400 meters from the western / right bank of Temernik, separated from it only by a garden settlement and a railway embankment, is the Smijowskaya Balka Holocaust Memorial . It was named after a side valley of the Temernik and is the burial place for around 27,000 civilians and prisoners of war who fell victim to an extermination operation by Einsatzgruppe D of the security police and SD in the summer of 1942 .
