Kirovgrad ( Russian Кировград ) is a city in Sverdlovsk Oblast ( Russia ) with 21,035 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010). Kirovgrad is not to be confused with the city of Kropywnyzkyj , formerly Kirowohrad (Russian Kirowograd) in Ukraine.

The city is located on the eastern edge of the Middle Urals , about 100 km northwest of the Oblast capital Yekaterinburg in the headwaters of the Neiwa , the left headwaters of the Niza in the Ob river system .

Kirovgrad is the center of an urban district of the same name .

Kirovgrad is connected to the Shurala station of the Perm - Kushwa railway line ( Goroblagodatskaya station ) - Yekaterinburg by a 9 km long branch line. The station of the city is called Jeschowaja (Ежёвая).

history

The village of Kalatai , later Kalata , was built in the place of the present city in the 17th century . At the beginning of the 18th century, the mining of copper ores discovered nearby began. The Kalatinski Sawod copper smelter was built in 1910–12 , around which a workers' settlement of the same name was built. This received city ​​rights in 1932 under the name Kalata . In 1935 it was renamed Kirovgrad , after the Soviet statesman Sergei Kirov, who was murdered in 1934 .
