Verkhnyaya Tura ( Russian Верхняя Тура ) is a city in Sverdlovsk Oblast ( Russia ) with 9,461 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The city is located on the eastern edge of the Urals , about 190 km north of the Oblast capital Yekaterinburg , on the Tura River . The climate is continental.
The city of Verkhnyaya Tura forms an independent urban district and is located 10 km northeast of the city of Kuschwa .
Verkhnyaya Tura is located on the Kuschwa ( Goroblagodatskaya station ) - Serow railway that opened in 1906 . The city's train station is called Verkhnyaya .
history
Verkhnyaya Tura was built in 1737 as a settlement near an iron foundry ( Turinski sawod / Tura-Werk , after the river). After the founding of the ironworks and the Lower Tura Works ( Нижнетуринский завод / Nischneturinski sawod, today Nizhnyaja Tura ) in 1754 and 1766, respectively, the name was changed to Verkackurinsky sawod ( Upper Tura Works ). In 1941 the place received town charter, with the settlement of more important industries further south - around Kuschwa - and north - around Nizhnyaya Tura - however, in contrast to many cities in the Ural region, the importance and number of inhabitants decreased continuously.
