Swobodny ( Russian Свобо́дный ) is a closed (SATO) urban-type settlement in the Sverdlovsk Oblast in Russia with 8198 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The place is about 130 km as the crow flies north of the Yekaterinburg Oblast Administrative Center , almost 30 km northeast of the city of Nizhny Tagil and 10 km west of the city of Verkhnyaya Salda on the eastern edge of the Urals . It is located on the Severka river, which flows over the Issa to the Salda .
Swobodny is the only town in the district of the same name.
history
The place was founded in 1960 as a secret military settlement of the Strategic Missile Forces of the Soviet Union . In 1965 it received the status of an urban-type settlement and its current name, Russian for "free" (from swoboda , "freedom"). The military code name was Nizhny Tagil -39. Since 1996 Svobodny is a closed administrative-territorial entity (SATO) and as such in the form of an urban district directly subordinate to the oblast.

Not far from the southwestern border of Svobodny is the station Iwa at kilometer 30 of the railway line Nizhny Tagil - Alapayevsk, which opened in 1912 and electrified since 1967 . The regional road 65K-1902 (formerly R353) from Nizhny Tagil to Nizhnyaya Salda (further as 65K-5501 to Alapayevsk) passes 4 km southeast of the railway line .
