Erich Glette (born August 4, 1896 in Wiesbaden , † January 26, 1980 in Prien am Chiemsee ) was a German painter .

Life

Erich Glette grew up in Nuremberg. His father was a factory owner who was from Brazil. After graduating from high school in 1914, Glette traveled to Rio de Janeiro , the first of several stays in Brazil. He briefly studied at the Technical University of Munich , but decided in 1916 to become a painter instead.

Glette first came to painting as an autodidact . After the death of his father in 1917, he became a student of his friend, the Bernese artist Martin Lauterburg . In 1922 Glette took part in an exhibition at the New Secession in Munich, of which he became a member three years later. In 1925 he showed some watercolors from Brazil at a collective exhibition at Hans Goltz in Munich. In the years 1927 to 1929, Glette was able to look forward to initial purchases by the Bavarian State Painting Collection and the Munich Municipal Gallery . He received orders such as the painting of the Church of St. Jakob in Döllnitz (1928). Glette lived in Munich from 1925 to 1934 and then in Brazil for two years until he returned to Munich.

In 1936, after an exhibition in the Maximilianeum in Munich , Glette was banned from exhibiting. At that time he was financially dependent on the help of a Brazilian cousin, as he rarely found buyers for his works. In 1943 his Munich apartment was bombed out , whereupon he found accommodation with friends in Schwabing. For the years 1951 to 1964 he received a professorship at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts . In 1952 he moved to Steinebach am Wörthsee , in 1961 he bought a farmhouse in Marquartstein . In 1965 he and Curth Georg Becker had an exhibition in the Darmstadt art gallery .

In his works, an often sketchy “written” brush language can be found in landscapes , still lifes and portraits . Erich Glette took part in the " Great Munich Art Exhibition " every year . In 1959 he became a member of the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts . A solo exhibition in his honor took place there in 1981, one year after Glette's death. In 2003, works by him were shown in the group exhibition 55 Years of the Seerosenkreis in the Munich City Hall Gallery.
