Philipp Haas Freiherr von Teichen (born November 18, 1859 in Vienna ; † February 26, 1926 there ) was an Austrian entrepreneur . He was the third generation to own the family empire Philipp Haas & Sons .

Live and act

Philipp Haas was the son of the industrialist Eduard Haas von Teppichen (Teichen) (born September 15, 1827 in Vienna, † November 13, 1880 in Nice ), who was honored several times for his services to the economy, including in 1868 by the Knighthood .

In his youth, Haas attended the weaving schools of Lyon and Leeds with regard to his father's trade . After his return to Vienna he put the company on "a completely new basis" due to this experience and after the death of his father in 1880 took over the management of the company. As a result, carpet manufacturing took on a further upswing that ensured great private wealth; In 1898 Haas was raised to the baron class with the title “von Teichen” (after his property) .

At the turn of the 20th century the company was converted into a stock corporation. From then on, Haas von Teichen devoted himself exclusively to the management of his estate, which he had expanded through the acquisition of large forest lords. In 1904 he sold the "Herrschaftsgut Teichen" in Kalwang , Styria , to Rudolf Ritter von Gutmann (1880–1966). In the same year he was given honorary citizenship by the municipality of Kalwang in view of his services to the municipality and the many donations he had made to the place.

When a severe kidney disease had become life-threatening in 1912, Haas decided, after spending the whole winter in the cottage sanatorium , to “cure himself”: thanks to a vigorous nature, the condition unexpectedly improved.

In 1925 a suppuration of Haas' kidney was found, as a result of which he lost his memory for long stretches. In addition, in the pain he “fantasized” that he no longer wanted to live. Evading any invasive medical attention, already showing signs of sepsis , Haas von Teichen shot himself with one of the numerous loaded rifles that decorated the walls of his palace in the morning hours of February 26, 1926.

In his farewell letter he wrote to the Neue Freie Presse , he stated:

"Now I'm mousy-dead - yuck! / Nowhere is my shoe pinching me! / There can be no more beautiful things. / I have peace, death should live!"

Months, if not years, before the end of his life, Philipp Haas, “once the focus of Viennese society” and “one of the most famous street characters”, had written a letter of “strange content” addressed to the Neue Freie Presse , Vienna imminent suicide. In this he explained - "the thirst for knowledge of some readers satisfactory" - his physical and mental state leading to action.

Philipp Haas von Teichen was married to Hedwig, Baroness von Waechter, and had a daughter, Gisela, married Countess von Szechenyi (1890–1945).
