Helmut Karl Machhammer (* 1962 in Kalwang ) is an Austrian sculptor .

Live and act

Helmut Machhammer was born in 1962 in the market town of Kalwang in Liesingtal and attended, among other things, the HTL Ortweinplatz in Graz from 1976 to 1980 , where he was taught by Josef Pillhofer (1921-2010), among others . He then attended the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna with Joannis Avramidis (1922–2016) until 1985 . Early in his career he received various awards, such as the Theodor-Körner Prize in 1986 or the Prize of the Vienna Chamber of Commerce in 1989. In the 1980s, the native of Styria moved to Carinthia , where he settled in the Krastal settled down. Machhammer still lives and works today (as of 2017) in the Krastal, as well as in St. Margarethen ob Töllerberg near Völkermarkt , but also in the federal capital Vienna . In 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2001, 2003, 2006, 2012 and 2016, he appeared as the organizer of the Krastal sculpture symposium . He has been an active member of this symposium since 1979. The main theme in his works is man ; his primary material is marble , especially the Krastal marble in his adopted home Carinthia. In his works entitled “Purzeln”, which were exhibited several times in German-speaking countries, he produced three-dimensional abstract bodies in such a way that they repeatedly reveal new views and new content by rotating the figure. This interactive process also contributes significantly to the understanding of the sculpture. This interplay between material, form and content is an important point in all of Machhammer's work. He not only works with marble or stone, but also with layered wooden planks, metals twisting through the room or devoting himself to unconventional ice cults (“Fire Cubes”).
