Josef Pillhofer (born June 1, 1921 in Vienna ; † July 30, 2010 there ) was an Austrian sculptor .

education

From 1938 to 1941 Josef Pillhofer studied sculpture with Wilhelm Gösser and painting with Rudolf Szyszkowitz at the Graz School of Applied Arts . After serving as a soldier in World War II , he returned to the Graz School of Applied Arts and soon after switched to the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, where he was a student of Fritz Wotruba from 1947 to 1950 . In 1950/51 he went on a scholarship to Paris. He took part in Ossip Zadkine's sculpting class at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière . During this stay, Wotruba's influence was put into perspective through his acquaintance with Constantin Brâncuși and Henri Laurens .

From 1955 Pillhofer was a member of the Vienna Secession , 1957 resulted in another foreign scholarship for three months in Rome.

In the 1950s, Pillhofer also worked for the Vienna Army History Museum . For example, on the occasion of the reopening of the museum in 1955, he created the bronze cast of Emperor Maximilian I for one of the two artillery halls ( Arsenal , Object 2). He was also active in restoration for the museum.

Pillhofer made sculptures and sculptures out of stone, wood, clay and metal. Stylistically, he was influenced by Wilhelm Lehmbruck , but the Cubists such as Henri Laurens and the abstract ones such as Constantin Brâncuși also shaped his work. Pillhofer is one of the few abstract sculptors from the Wotruba school.

Teaching activities

From 1954 to 1970 Pillhofer was a lecturer and later assistant at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. From 1970 to 1981 he was professor at the master class for sculpture at the Graz School of Applied Arts. Also in Graz, he was professor for artistic design at the Technical University from 1972 to 1974 .

Private

Pillhofer lived and worked in Vienna and Mürzzuschlag . He was married to his wife for over 50 years and had two sons and two daughters with her. His daughter Christine Pillhofer (1954–2018) was also a sculptor.

Pillhofer has built a Pillhofer Hall in Neuberg an der Mürz , Styria , in which numerous sculptures and works on paper can be seen. He is also with works u. a. represented in the following museums:
