The Liaunig Museum in Neuhaus (Slov. Suha) is a private art museum in Carinthia . It opened in 2008. In addition to the Essl Collection in Klosterneuburg , it is the second Austrian private museum for contemporary art. The private collection of the industrialist and art collector Herbert W. Liaunig , who lives in Neuhaus Castle in south-east Carinthia, will be presented. The museum has been run by his son, the architect Peter Liaunig, since 2018.

prehistory

Since around 2000, Liaunig had been planning to build a museum for his collection, which no longer had enough space in his residence at Neuhaus Castle . It should also be available to the public.

A first competition for the construction of a museum took place in 2004, which was won by the French architect Odile Decq . Original commitments by the Carinthian state government to contribute financially to the construction and operating costs of the museum did not come to fruition under the cultural consultants Jörg Haider and Martin Strutz (both BZÖ ). The implementation of Decq's plans failed, among other things, because the cost of their project was overrun. A second, purely Austrian competition followed, which the querkraft team of architects won.

architecture

The museum was designed by the Viennese team of architects querkraft . The building is characterized by exposed concrete and steel , reminiscent of Liaunig's industrial career, and comprises a usable area of 4,400 m². The industrial appearance was requested by Liaunig in the tender. From the lower entrance area, a display depot with an area of around 600 m² leads to the transverse wing for painting and sculpture diagonally upwards. This part of the building is constructed as a white cube with a tube-like main room 160 meters long, only 13 meters wide and seven meters high, the size of the exhibition area here is around 2000 m². The tube consists of a concreted U-shape with a shell made of powder-coated sheet steel with glass strips. Most of the building is set into a hilltop, but has natural skylight in most areas. At both ends the building protrudes over the embankment, on one side 30 m towards the main road with a viewing terrace.

Three other structures are subordinate to this main building, in which there is an area for graphics with around 500 m² and the black cube for the “Akan Gold” collection with around 350 m². The costs for the museum amounted to around EUR 9.5 million.

Due to the collection that has grown to 3,000 works, the museum has been expanded by around 2,500 m² to a total of 7,500 m² since spring 2014 according to plans by the Viennese team of architects querkraft and reopened on April 25, 2015.

The new triangular room, which branches off next to the foyer, now for the first time also provides space for loans and temporary exhibitions, as well as a stage for readings, concerts and other events. A 50 meter long corridor leads to the new glass and miniature collection. There is also a sculpture hall in the basement. The reverberation time there is five seconds. In addition, a "sculpture garden set into the landscape" is being built.

The museum was placed under monument protection by the Federal Monuments Office four years after its completion in December 2012 .

collection

The museum presents a selection of 300 works from the collection, which comprises a total of around 2500 works of art. According to the museum, it is one of the largest collections of Austrian art from 1950 onwards, supplemented by striking works by foreign painters and sculptors. Reviewers speak of the largest exhibition collection of Austrian post-war art . The Austrians represented in the collection include Arnulf Rainer , Maria Lassnig , Hans Bischoffshausen , Meina Schellander , Cornelius Kolig , Bruno Gironcoli , Wolfgang Hollegha , Markus Prachensky , Hans Staudacher , Drago Prelog and Helga Philipp .

A light installation by Brigitte Kowanz also creates a connection to the collection of gold objects from Africa, which are presented in a separate, completely underground wing. The exhibition "Gold of the Akan" presents 600 jewelry and cult objects from African royal tribes (Ashanti, Baule, Ebrie) . The exhibits, mostly from the 19th and 20th centuries, represent one of the four largest collections in the world on this subject.

Liaunig's advisor on the establishment and organization of the museum and curator of the current exhibition is Peter Baum , who previously worked as a gallery and museum director in Linz for many years . Parts of the display collection are to be replaced annually.

In 2009, 8,400 visitors were registered.

Awards

In 2011 the museum was awarded the Austrian Museum Prize. On May 1, 2011, Österreichische Post AG issued a stamp on the architectural work of art as part of the definitive series of art houses .
