Herbert Walter Liaunig (born July 11, 1945 in Radenthein , Carinthia ) is an Austrian entrepreneur and art collector.

He completed his studies in economics with the academic degree of business graduate (Dkfm.).

Activity as an entrepreneur

In 1989 he founded the Management Trust Holding (MTH) together with Josef Taus and Manfred Leeb . In 1989 he also founded Auricon Beteiligungs AG , based in Vienna, which was the sole owner of Auricon Immobilien GmbH and held some industrial holdings . In 2001 Auricon was dissolved, the shareholders were directly involved in the industrial subsidiaries Jenbacher AG and Austria Email AG . His company also included Mericon Holding, which was founded in 1974 and held shares in Österreichische Schiffswerften AG . In 1995, Mercion Holding acquired a majority stake in Waagner-Biro , and in the same year Mericon was merged with Auricon.

Liaunig has made a name for itself primarily as a restructuring company of numerous companies (partly as a manager, partly as owner), including the chipboard manufacturer Funder , Jenbacher , Österreichische Schiffswerften AG and Austria Email AG . As a renovator, however, he was not without controversy, so he resolved some differences of opinion, for example with the green social spokesman Karl Öllinger or the Mayor of Vienna Michael Häupl , in court. Among other things, he was accused of merely undermining companies. For this reason, he had a book written by German historians about the history of Auricon, in which the successful corporate development of the restructured company is to be documented by means of company key figures (such as number of employees and profit) before Auricon joins and after Auricon leaves.

The 100 percent owned by the Herbert Liaunig private foundation located Liaunig Industrieholding AG is on the Wild Holding GmbH with 75 percent of the in Völkermarkt based manufacturer of opto-mechatronic products Wild GmbH involved. In December 2012, which was GENERA Holding GmbH (previously GENERA AG & Co KG ) established that 36% of Waagner-Biro and with 28% of Binder + Co is involved. Liaunig Industrieholding and GENERA are under joint management. Herbert Liaunig is the chairman of the supervisory board, the board members are his older son Sascha Liaunig and Thomas Jost.

HL Museumsverwaltung GmbH, which is also 100 percent owned by the Herbert Liaunig Private Foundation and is based in Neuhaus, was taken over by the second son, the architect Peter Liaunig, who was one year younger.

In May 2012, Liaunig's entry into Semper Constantia Privatbank as the new co-owner was announced.

In 2015, Liaunig was listed among the richest Austrians in the business magazine trend (2014: 70th, 2013: 67th), with an estimated fortune of 300 to 500 million euros.

Art collection

Neuhaus Castle
Museum Liaunig in Neuhaus, Carinthia

In 1988 he bought Neuhaus Castle near Lavamünd in southern Carinthia as a residence and for his art collection. In the following years it was renovated and rebuilt according to the plans of the architect Günther Domenig . The castle also functions as a regional cultural center.

Liaunig's collection includes around 2500 modern works of art as well as African gold art, books, atlases, silver and glasses. In 2008 Liaunig opened the private museum Museum Liaunig in Neuhaus . Because the collection has grown to 3,000 works, the museum has been expanded by around 2,500 m² to a total of 7,500 m² since spring 2014 according to plans by the Viennese team of architects querkraft and reopened in April 2015.

The Liaunig Museum was placed under monument protection by the Federal Monuments Office four years after its completion in December 2012 .

Honor

In 2003 Herbert Liaunig and his wife Eva Liaunig (née Roth) were awarded the single-player prize , named after the Carinthian priest, politician and publicist Andrej Einspiel , donated by the Christian Cultural Association and the Council of Carinthian Slovenes . Laudator Rosina Katz-Logar paid tribute to the couple, among other things, for having opened their castle to Slovenian culture and for courageously taking a stand for an open mindset on issues relating to ethnic groups.
