Sul ponticello , abbreviation sp (Italian "on the bridge ") is a playing instruction for string instruments in which the bow should be led as close as possible to the bridge . As a result, high overtones are stimulated and an overall sharp timbre is generated (in contrast to the soft sound of the flautando or “sul tasto”). Very effective, and also u. a. often used in film music is the simultaneous use of sul ponticello and tremoli .
