Namborn case

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Namborn case in 1873/1874 was one of the most serious Kulturkampf conflicts in the Diocese of Trier before there was an even greater escalation in connection with the apparitions of Mary in Marpingen in 1876/1877 .

In the summer of 1873 the parish priest of Namborn retired. The Bishop of Trier, Matthias Eberhard , disregarded the laws enacted as part of the Kulturkampf by summoning Pastor Jakob Isbert to the pastor's office without first making a prescribed report to the Prussian authorities about the occupation of the pastorate. District Administrator Karl Hermann Rumschöttel publicly accused Pastor Isbert of an illegal act in November 1873. Isbert only visited Namborn secretly at night and stayed in the Principality of Birkenfeld during the day . In the summer of 1874, Isbert was sentenced to 32 months imprisonment in absentia.

In July 1874, the mayor of Alsweiler , Wilhelm Woytt, and a police officer, Pastor Isbert, succeeded in hiring. This led to riots among the population. Only after the intervention of the pastor from the neighboring community of Furschweiler did the crowd disperse. In St. Wendel , from where the pastor was to be taken by train to Saarbrücken to serve his imprisonment, this scene was repeated. Around 1,000 Catholics stormed the station and only after the deployment of military troops could the crowd be dispersed. 23 people were arrested. The confrontation between Catholic citizens and Prussian supremacy occurred in the same month in which the Catholic journeyman cooper Eduard Kullmann carried out his assassination attempt on Otto von Bismarck . Against this background, very severe penalties were issued against the people who were involved in the storming of the station. Four people were sentenced to three years in prison. Another received eighteen months' imprisonment and another six months.
