Alsweiler is a district of Marpingen in the St. Wendel district in Saarland . Alsweiler was an independent municipality until the end of 1973.

history

Archaeological finds suggest that the area itself, but not today's local area of Alsweiler, was inhabited in Roman times. 634 Tholey and the surrounding hamlets were mentioned in the will of Adalgisel Grimo . Although Alsweiler is not listed here by name, it is assumed that the place already existed at that time. Through this will, Tholey and its surroundings became the property of the St. Mary's Church in Verdun . The counts of Bliesgau became patrons . 1231 was a Countess of Luxembourg feudal lord in Tholey, for 1235 Count Gerlach von Veldenz is documented as feudal lord and in 1278 the Schaumberg area passed into the hands of the Counts of Lorraine . The area was later divided. Alsweiler may have been administered by the Counts of Bitsch towards the end of the 15th century . The Counts of Zweibrücken ruled from 1590, and from 1605 the Dukes of Lorraine. After the death of Stanislaus Leszczyński , who had received the Duchy of Lorraine in 1735, the Duchy passed into the possession of the French crown in 1766. The Oberamt Schaumburg, to which Alsweiler belonged, was transferred to the Duchy of Palatinate-Zweibrücken in 1787 as part of a contractual swap of territory ; at the same time, the territory was transferred from French sovereignty to that of the then German Empire .

As a result of the French Revolutionary Wars , the region and with it Alsweiler came back to France after 1792 . Alsweiler was assigned to the canton Tholey until 1814 , which was part of the Thionville arrondissement in the Moselle department . At the beginning of 1814, the Left Bank of the Rhine came back into German ownership, and in the subsequent Paris Peace of May 31, 1814, parts of the Moselle department were also ceded by France . The meanwhile competent Austrian-Bavarian administration ordered the provisional assignment of the canton Tholey to the Saar department on June 17, 1814 .

After the Congress of Vienna (1815) Alsweiler came first to the Kingdom of Prussia and in 1816 to the Duchy of Saxony-Coburg-Saalfeld , which in 1819 named its exclave the Principality of Lichtenberg . In 1834 the area was given back to Prussia and remained part of the Trier administrative district in the Rhine province until 1919 as the St. Wendel district .

With the Treaty of Versailles (1919) the Saar area was placed under the League of Nations and the French administration in 1920 , before it was re-assigned to Germany by referendum in 1935. After the Second World War , the French military government took over. From 1947 to 1957 the Saarland was autonomous; the Alsweiler administrative district merged with the St. Wendel-Land administrative district at the beginning of this phase. In 1957 the Saarland was incorporated into the Federal Republic of Germany. Alsweiler has been part of the municipality of Marpingen since the territorial and administrative reform that came into force on January 1, 1974.

coat of arms

The coat of arms shows a mutilated silver eagle in a red shield head between golden double crosses . The actual coat of arms is divided obliquely to the left in a wave cut. In the upper half a growing red lion is depicted on a golden background, in the lower half a golden abbot's staff lying obliquely to the left, wrapped in a silver velum , on a red background.

The head of the shield indicates the rule of the Duchy of Lorraine. The lion goes back to the Counts of Zweibrücken-Bitsch , the abbot's staff with velum indicates the obligation to pay the Tholey Abbey . The wave cut could allude to the location or the name of the place. Both the Alsbach and the Bruchelsbach have their source in the Alsweiler area.
