From 1978 to 1980 he worked here as an assistant. In 1980 he took part in the Darmstadt summer courses and then in Mauricio Kagel's class for new music theater at the Cologne University of Music . Until 1985 he studied with György Ligeti at the Hamburg University of Music and Theater .

In the late 1970s, Bouliane was program director of the Association de musique actuelle de Quebec . In the same year he became a member of the artistic committee of the Société de Musique Contemporaine de Quebéc (SMCQ).

The collaboration with Denis Marleau and the choreographer Édouard Lock resulted in performances of Georg Büchner's Woyzeck (Belgium 1993) and Frank Wedekind's Lulu (Montreal 1995–96) for dance theater, for which Bouliane composed the music. Together with Walter Boudreau , he was artistic coordinator and conductor of the Québec-Musiques-au-présent festival for contemporary music from 1998 to 2000 .
