Jacques Joseph Robert Hétu (born August 8, 1938 in Trois-Rivières , Québec , † February 9, 2010 in Montreal , Québec) was a Canadian composer.

Hétu studied Gregorian singing at the University of Ottawa with Jules Martel from 1955 to 1956 . He then attended the Conservatoire de musique du Québec until 1956 , where he studied composition with Clermont Pépin , harmony with Isabelle Delorme , counterpoint with Jean Papineau-Couture , piano with Georges Savaria and oboe with Melvin Berman .

In the summer of 1959 he attended a composition course with Lukas Foss at the Berkshire Music Center in Tanglewood . In 1961 he received - as the first composer after Henri Mercure 1927 - a Prix d'Europe and went to Paris, where he studied normal composition with Henri Dutilleux at the École until 1963 and analysis at the Conservatoire de Paris with Olivier Messiaen in 1962 and 1963 .

After returning to Canada, he taught at Laval University until 1977 . Here he taught music literature and analysis, gave introductory courses in orchestration and founded a composition class. He then taught composition at the University of Montreal and from 1979 to 2000 at the Université du Québec .

Hétu was considered one of the most successful classical composers in Canada in the 20th century. His first two symphonies were written while he was still a student. In 1963 Victor Bouchard and Renée Morisset performed his Sonata for two pianos at Carnegie Hall in New York. Glenn Gould recorded his Variations on record in 1967 . His Fantasy for Orchestra was the 1976 Canadian entry at the Montreal International Music Competition . In 1990 his Images de la Révolution were performed by the New York Philharmonic Orchestra under Charles Dutoit . With the same orchestra, the USA premiered his horn concerto under Kurt Masur in 1992 . In 1989 Hétu became a member of the Royal Society of Canada , and in 1992 an officer of the Order of Canada . A school was named after him in his native Trois-Rivières.
