Jean Papineau Couture
Jean Papineau-Couture , CC (born November 12, 1916 in Montreal ; † August 11, 2000 there ) was a Canadian composer.
life and career
The grandson of the musician Guillaume Couture had piano lessons as a child from his mother and from 1926 to 1939 from Françoise D'Amour , who also taught him harmony, music history and reading scores. He also studied counterpoint with Gabriel Cusson . In 1939 and 1940 he was a piano student of Léo-Pol Morin . In 1940 he studied composition with Quincy Porter , orchestral conducting with Francis Findlay and piano with Beveridge Webster at the New England Conservatory in Boston . From 1941 to 1943 he finally studied with Nadia Boulanger at the Longy School in Cambridge / Massachusetts .
In 1945 Papineau couture returned to Montreal. Here he taught from 1946 to 1963 at the Conservatoire de musique du Québec and from 1951 to 1982 at the University of Montreal , where he was dean of the music faculty from 1968 to 1973. His most important students were Marcelle Deschênes , Richard Grégoire , Jacques Hétu , François Morel , André Prévost and Gilles Tremblay .
Papineau-Couture was a founding member of the Canadian Music Center and the Société de musique contemporaine du Québec (SMCQ), President of the Jeunesses musicales du Canada (JMC) (1956-64), the Canadian League of Composers (1957-59 and 1963- 66), the Académie de musique du Québec (AMQ) (1962-63), the Canadian Music Council (1967-68) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (1977-78). In 1962 he received the Prix de musique Calixa-Lavallée , in 1973 the Canadian Music Council Medal and in 1994 the Governor General's Performing Arts Award . In 1968 he was appointed officer of the Order of Canada .
Papineau-Couture was married to the author Isabelle Papineau-Couture . His son François Papineau-Couture is an instrument maker and flutist.
